Olena M<\/b><\/strong>y<\/b><\/strong>tnyk<\/b><\/strong>, head of the Legal Awareness expert group\u00a0of the Directorate for Human Rights, Access to Justice and Legal Awareness,\u00a0Ministry of Justice of Ukraine<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n The finalist\u00a0teams\u00a0prepared their\u00a0homework,\u00a0that\u00a0was evaluated by the jury. Namely, the teams gave presentations on the topic\u00a0“What is mediation and why are dispute resolution services necessary?” Also\u00a0they simulated the mediation procedure by recreating the real situations that they encountered at school.<\/p>\n
Having evaluated the presentations, the jury decided to award the title\u00a0“Best School Dispute Resolution Service 2018”\u00a0to the team of mediators of UDRS\u00a0“Dovira” from Novomykolaivka, Kherson region.<\/p>\n

In addition, a number of\u00a0master classes were devoted to the issues of mediation, non-violent communication, restorative approach and bullying countermeasures at\u00a0school.<\/p>\n
Another event that took place at the\u00a0forum was the\u00a0press conference devoted to mediation and its development in Ukraine. In particular, it was discussed how\u00a0school mediation can\u00a0resolve conflicts at\u00a0school, the history and prospects of creating school dispute resolution\u00a0services in Ukraine, and practices of school mediation. The participants also discussed the results of the Legal Development Network project “Development of school dispute resolution services\u201d.<\/p>\n
The press conference was attended by Ella Petrenko<\/b><\/strong>, Head of the Legal Development Network project “Development of school dispute resolution services\u201d, Tetyana Shevchuk<\/b><\/strong>, regional coordinator of the project in Khmilnyk\u00a0district\u00a0of Vinnytsia region, Natalia Zykova<\/b><\/strong>, regional coordinator of the project in Skadovsk district of Kherson oblast, and E<\/b><\/strong>lizaveta Koval<\/b><\/strong>, mediator and coach-facilitator of the NGO “Institute for Peace and Understanding”.<\/p>\n
During the press conference Ella Petrenko<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0spoke about the results of the Legal Development Network project “Development of school dispute resolution services\u201d. As a result of the project implementation the\u00a0communication\u00a0was established\u00a0between the offices and the school dispute resolution services in\u00a05 regions with over\u00a0140 participants of\u00a0the coordination meetings. 42 coaches-facilitators were trained\u00a0by the\u00a0mediation\u00a0specialists from the Institute for Peace and Understanding.<\/p>\n
As a part of the project 250 mediators (both schoolchildren and teachers)\u00a0were trained, and the activities\u00a0of the newly created SCRS\u00a0covered over\u00a06 thousand children in 22 educational establishments. One of the immediate\u00a0results\u00a0of the project implementation is the fact that\u00a0at the moment 38 school dispute resolution\u00a0services work in partnership with the Legal Development Network\u00a0offices in\u00a0Bilozerka (Kherson oblast, 6 services), Dvorichna (Kharkiv oblast, 3 services), Skadovsk (Kherson region, 8 services), Khmilnyk (Vinnitsa region, 8 services), Kovel (Volyn region, 5 services), Turbov and Lipovtsy (Vinnytska oblast, 8 services).<\/p>\n
Eliza<\/b><\/strong>veta<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0Koval<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0paid attention to the specifics of the\u00a0restorative practices during mediation. She talked about\u00a0their principles: voluntariness, confidentiality, neutrality and distribution of responsibility.<\/p>\n
Natalia Zykova<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0devoted her speech to the implementation of mediation in schools\u00a0of\u00a0Skadovsky district of the Kherson region. She explained the benefits of this method in resolving conflicts, emphasizing\u00a0that it greatly contributes to the development of leadership qualities. She also talked about\u00a0the obstacles to\u00a0mediation development in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Tetyana Shevchuk<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0spoke about the development of conflict resolution services in Khmelnytsky district of the Vinnytsia region\u00a0and about the\u00a0on cooperation with the \u201cInstitute for\u00a0Peace and Understanding\u201d\u00a0on the trainers\u2019 capacity development. She also said that as a result of their cooperation with local government, the funds for further training for students in mediation will be allocated from the local budget.<\/p>\n
The press conference was attended by the student-mediator of the Nerubai Educational Complex Yulia Mikhaylenko<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0(Odesa region), who talked about the practical aspects of mediation in school and typical problems that make the students turn for help to mediators.<\/p>\n
