Handbook to Human Rights Innovations in Eastern Europe
Publication date: November 2, 2026
This handbook brings together 11 case studies from five Grassroots Justice Network member organizations in Albania, North Macedonia and Ukraine. Among them are the Ukrainian Legal Aid Foundation, the Ukrainian Association of Paralegals, the Center for Legal Empowerment (CLE), Association LET STATION and Romano Chachipe. The cases show how creative approaches can advance human rights: a legal board game, civil resistance combined with strategic litigation, the “Green Friday” environmental initiative, community mapping, police custody reform and a growing network of community paralegals.
Each case study sets out the problem, the solution and creative tools used, the results achieved, and recommendations for organizations seeking to launch similar initiatives. The handbook was prepared by a team of HLSGDC students for the Legal Development Network.
