An IDP woman received assistance in confirming ownership of her inherited house and submitting information about the damage

Publication date: January 21, 2024

Yevheniia*, an internally displaced person (IDP) from the Pologivskyi district of Zaporizhzhia oblast, asked the NGO STEP to help her file a report on her war-damaged property. After reviewing the documents provided by the woman, the organization’s lawyer, Anton Stasik, discovered that the property register needed to include information about Yevheniia’s ownership of her house. This information is necessary to file a claim.

Anton Stasik, a lawyer at STEP NGO.

– Such problems are standard. People cannot report damaged property because the ownership documents were issued or received before the State Register of Property Rights was created, i.e. before 2013. Therefore, there needs to be more information about it in the register. The situation in this case is similar: Yevheniia inherited a residential building, but after that, she did not make any transactions with it, so the information was not entered into the Register of Property Rights, the lawyer said.

Anton Stasik advised the woman and guided her through the algorithm of actions. First, he helped her prepare documents for the local administrative services center. After submitting them, Yevheniia received a certificate from the Bureau of Technical Inventory about her house, which was then registered in the State Register of Property Rights.

The woman then filed a report on the damaged property through Diia.

– It is essential to check whether real estate ownership is registered in the State Register. It allows you to avoid disputes over real estate ownership and possible fraudulent actions against the property and to exercise or effectively protect your rights as an owner, advises the lawyer.
